While water flossers help remove food debris from the tight interdental spaces, they are not as effective as traditional floss. This is because the floss provides a mechanical cleansing function for removing food debris that ensures better cleaning than a water flosser.
However, water flossers can be recommended for patients in the following cases:
- Sensitive Gums - water flossers are less painful in these cases.
- Dexterity Problems - a water flosser is recommended in patients who do not have sufficient manual dexterity to use traditional floss, e.g., physical or mental disabilities.
- Braces - tooth braces often make flossing quite challenging. Your dentist may suggest a water flosser in addition to an interdental toothbrush to ensure optimal oral hygiene during your orthodontic treatment.
